How Kitty O'Neil became deaf and communicated
Meet Kitty O'Neil, a remarkable woman whose journey is nothing short of inspiring. Kitty faced a unique challenge from a very young age. At just five months old, she lost her hearing due to a trio of infectious diseases: measles, mumps, and smallpox. The high fever caused nerve damage that left her unable to hear.
By the time Kitty was two years old, it was clear she was deaf. But her mother, Patsy Linn Compton, didn't let that stop her. Instead, she took on the incredible task of teaching Kitty how to communicate using throat vibrations, lip-reading, and speech. Despite the challenges, Kitty's mother discouraged her from learning sign language, believing that mastering spoken language was crucial for her daughter's success.
Growing up, Kitty was homeschooled by her dedicated mother, who was also studying education at The University of Texas. Through perseverance and hard work, Kitty learned to speak, relying on lip-reading and vibrations to understand others.
At the age of eight, Kitty bravely entered public school, facing a world where she could speak but couldn't hear. Despite the obstacles, she persisted, continuing her education and adapting to her unique circumstances. Along the way, Kitty's mother pursued her own career as a speech therapist, further enhancing their understanding of communication and language.
Together, Kitty O'Neil and her mother embarked on a remarkable journey. Their shared experiences led them to start the Listening Eyes School for the Deaf in Wichita Falls, Texas. This institution became a beacon of hope for hearing-impaired students, providing them with the tools and support they needed to thrive in a hearing world.
Despite facing significant challenges, Kitty O'Neil refused to be defined by her deafness.
